Everyone knows they need to exercise but what kind of exercise do you choose? There are many different forms of exercise to choose from, and within each type of exercise there are even more moves to do. Open up any fitness magazine and you will see lots and lots of exercises. Google how to lose weight and you will get millions of search results all with different exercises to do. If you want to look like Arnold there are thousands of exercises to choose from, how on earth do you choose and where do you start?
I remember when I first started working out I would read about it in a popular muscle magazine and I would do the movements at the gym, once my results did not live up to my expectations I got discouraged, so I watched the biggest guys at the gym and mimicked what they did. I injured myself and again I got discouraged. Maybe this working out stuff just wasn’t for me, I felt lost and confused by all of the different information out there. One person says this is the greatest work out of all time, while another person says you should never do those movements. Who was I supposed to believe?
A personal trainer is a master of movement and exercise. They have studied movement and they understand how each muscle acts and interacts within the body. They understand what it takes to lose weight or gain weight. They understand how to transform bodies into a lean, fit, machine. They are like artists except the paintbrush is not their tool, weights are.
When you hire a personal trainer you are hiring an expert, you wouldn’t hire a plumber to fix your computer. If you had a plumbing issue you would seek out a professional plumber. A personal trainer will take the time to understand you and who you are as a person, they will review your medical history, go over your goals in great detail, they should perform a body analysis to get a good starting point and baseline, and finally they should perform a movement analysis to pinpoint if you have any muscle imbalances.
Once they have a clear understanding of your goals and your physical starting point they will design a customer program for you. Depending on these factors determines which exercises you do and what you start out with. If you are a beginner then you will start off with beginner work outs to develop a strong solid fountain and core. If you are a pro and you have a good foundation then you can jump right into advanced movements. There are some advanced and technical movements which has prerequisites you must master first. For example cross fit has a lot of Olympic powerlifting movements, these exercises are very technical and you must have perfect squat, deadlift, and overhead press form before you can begin these lifts. A personal trainer will understand this and start you off at the beginning and make sure you can perfect the basics before you move on to more complicated movements.
Training often goes beyond program design, training is more mental than it is physical. There are going to be times where you just don’t want to work out and you would much rather lay down on the couch, a trainer will hold you accountable and get your butt up off the couch and work out. A trainer will also provide you the support you need when you feel like you don’t have any more left in you, they will push you past your physical limitations. They will inspire you and motivate you. They will make you realize you can do anything you put your mind to.
