Are you making your fitness a priority?

We’ve said it once. We’ve said it twice. We’ve said it a million times.

“I don’t have enough time.”

Most people rely on this one excuse when they’re asked about the role of fitness in their lives. And once you completely start relying on such excuses, bit by bit your power to control your life starts to dwindle and you eventually become someone who’s doing nothing but pushing water uphill with a rake.

It’s time to accept the bitter truth. You don’t have enough time to workout because it has never been a priority. It’s on you whether or not you want to assign value to health and fitness. Once you start looking at it as something that is under your control, the excuse becomes a weak argument.

Why is “less time” the most common excuse? This might sting a little. But most people come up with that excuse just to feel more important and productive. Being honest to yourself can be a major hook to your self esteem. But once you stop lying to yourself, you realize that you’ve been spending way too much time cruising through the internet for no reason or you just spent a few minutes doing the dishes which you thought took you hours. It’s time to change your ‘I don’t have time’ to ‘Health was never a priority’ and take control.

Now you may say that there’s way too much on your plate and every thing is a priority. But just think once: Is everything that important? You assign the level of importance to everything you do throughout your day. Cut down on all the time you spend on Facebook or on watching T.V and VIOLAAA!! You have more than 10 hours of free time per week. So now the quote by J.D Roth will actually make some sense. More than 10 hours a week is a bonus when you can get a great workout in just 30 minutes. This way you can also find time for other hobbies as well.

So here’s how you can productively reap the benefits of fitness without wasting much time on it:

Just because you can multi-task, does not mean you have to multi-task. You just have to just find 30 minutes for working out everyday. Devote those 30 minutes completely to working out. This way you’ll finish faster and also work-out more efficiently. You have absolutely no reason to use your phone while working out unless you have your workout routine on it.

Find a time when no one can disturb you. Set up a time, preferably early in the morning when the whole world is sleeping for working out. So that you can workout peacefully without any distractions from your family members, your boss or any one in that case.

Use modern technology to your advantage. We live in a generation where there is an application for everything. And yes! There are applications for time management as well. You can track the amount of time you’re spending on a task using applications such as RESCUE TIME. You can also use self control applications that lock you out of social networking websites for a given period of time. Fitness related applications can also be used such as MY FITNESS PAL, which is used for determining the number of calories you’re consuming though each meal without actually doing all the calculations. This way you save a lot of time and also get to track your diet at the same time.

Turn off all the notifications on your phone. Infact turn off the phone itself unless you’re using it for playing music. Remember that you’re only supposed to work out during that assigned time. Your chat conversations or e-mail s can surely wait for half an hour.

Make your list of priorities simpler by making it smaller. Don’t make a list of 100 things you have to do in a single day. Prioritize not more than 5 major things that have to be done no matter what.

And finally, do put an alert sign outside your gym door. Your family members might take some time to get used to your new habits. So keep reminding them that it’s “you” time.

It’s time to stop lamenting about your overwork and sleep deprivation. Just be honest to yourself. And remember, you can be a healthier version of yourself if and only if it fits your priorities.
