Beginning again (getting a fresh start)

Getting older has many perks, you get wiser, you get smarter, you realize the things you stressed over in your 20’s no longer matter, and you cherish everyday you wake up breathing. You see your children growing up into young adults and they amaze you every day by the things they accomplish, getting older is a gift. On the other hand, getting older takes a toll on your body and your health. The older you get the bigger your pant size seems to get, you seem to store fat in places you were always tight and firm, you used to have unlimited energy and now it seems like you are ready for bed by 7pm, and you may even have medical problems you never dreamed you would have like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or Type 2 diabetes. If you have been diagnosed with one or more of these medical problems this can be heartbreaking, you know that your parents have these issues but you never dreamed this would happen to you.
What do you do?
Your doctor told you it’s not the end of the world, with diet and exercise these can be reversed or managed. You might even be able to stop taking medication or a very low dosage, which is fantastic news. But it still begs the question of what to do. Your doctor probably didn’t give you much information, maybe a handout with general information about losing weight. It’s not the doctor’s fault, its just not his area of expertise. So, you do exactly what you know to do, you jump on Google and search “how to lose weight” and you are overwhelmed with all the information out there and your head starts to hurt. You read one article and it starts to sound good to you, and you read another article which completely contradicts everything the first article told you.
Diet after diet, workout after workout, they all seem to do the exact same thing in a vicious cycle. You find the perfect diet and exercise plan; you download the eBook and go to the grocery store. After the first couple of weeks you drop 5lbs, this is amazing you think to yourself. At this rate, I will be at my goal weight in no time. After a couple more weeks you drop another 5lbs, but its getting really hard to follow the plan, you are sick and tired of the same old boring food you keep eating over and over again. Your whole body hurts and aches from the high intense exercises 7 days a week, you don’t think you can keep this up much longer, this is not sustainable. Then one day you say to yourself I’m taking a day off, I’ll start again tomorrow, but tomorrow never comes. The cycle repeats itself with different diets and exercises. You need something else, and you need something sustainable to last the rest of your life.
The problem with these types of diets and programs is they do not meet you where you are at, they don’t coach you or hold you accountable. When life happens and you must deviate away from your plan they don’t let you know that its going to be ok and tomorrow is a new day. They wont be able to give you alternatives on what to eat or different exercises to try. Most importantly they aren’t on your side, they aren’t your own personal cheer leader and coach. This is where my coaching program excels at, we meet you where you are at and we help establish healthy sustainable long lasting habits. You might not be ready for a complicated body building split and you might not even be interested in this. You just want to be able to move better and move more. You probably have no interest in counting calories or perfecting your macro nutrient ratio. You just want to know what you should do and why. I don’t prescribe meal plans for this very reason, I don’t do it because they don’t educate.
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Maimonides.
We will work on what is best for you to achieve your goals. We take a slow progressive approach to nutrition; we will start with small changes once a week until they become a habit. At the end of the program you will be confident enough to make your own choices and you will know why you are making those choices. I don’t believe in going cold turkey, because this is setting you up for failure. When life happens and you can’t stick to your plan you feel like a failure and you might be tempted to give up all together. With small changes overtime, you won’t be derailed when life gets in the way, you will know how to cope with it and make the best decision with what you have and the next day you will be back on your routine.
